Walter Benjamin’s influential essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” argued that works of art lose their ‘aura’ when artworks can be easily reproduced with new technologies. This piece offers the opportunity to instantly turn on or off an aura. It comprises of a simple white acrylic box with two LED lights embedded in it, red for off, green for on. Internally, a simple microcontroller determines when the aura generated by the box should on or off. Resembling the contemporary aesthetics of consumer products, the Aurabox sits uneasily on a line between art and commerce.
